South Congregational Church records, 1828-1929.

Church records of the South Congregational Society (Unitarian), Boston, Mass., 1828-1929, include vital records, such as baptisms, marriages, and deaths, 1828-1929; minutes from the Standing Committee and copies of annual reports, 1857-1921; financial and property records, 1862-1928; Board of Charities records, which include names and addresses of members and some correspondence, 1889-1925; Sunday School attendance records and class lists; 1857-67; scrapbooks of church publications and newspaper clippings, 1828-1926; and a published volume of the history of the church, 1878. Collection also includes handwritten sermons of Rev. Edward Hale, 1888-89; an account book kept by Hale recording articles contributed to a magazine he edited, entitled "Old and New," 1870-75; and records of the Hale Club which was established in 1891 to promote the cause of Unitarianism, 1891-1913.

Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909) was an American author and Unitarian minister. Hale was involved in many social reform movements, including abolition and popular education. He is best known for his 1863 short story, "The Man Without a Country," which promoted patriotic support of the Union.
